Maps

Operational

The Operational Map, from the GMT game "Operation Mercury", governed naval and air movement. Ownership of a copy of Op Mercury is require to make heads or tails of how to use it in play, as the operational rules were modeled closely on this game.

Tactical

The maps in the first column (magic marker on tracing paper - very hi tech!) served as blueprints to setup the game tables. Each table was 9'x6' except for Galatas - Suday Bay, which was 12'x6'. These maps are quite large and come in two versions: one is an image of the entire map, the other is broken into separate gifs equivalent to 3' square sections of the fullsize table. Perhaps this format will prove more convenient for those who actually want to setup a game.

Historical

The maps in the second column are from the volume on Crete in the "Official History of New Zealand in the Second World War" by D.M. Davin. This is an outstanding reference source on the entire battle, despite the fact that it primarily concentrates on the fighting around Maleme and Galatas - natural because of the predominance of New Zealand forces in these areas. The Order of Battle for the entire Allied force is worth its weight in gold, and, given the wonderful level of detail, is just as valuable to the skirmish gamer as to the campaigner. Unfortunately, this volume is very hard to come by in the US and this is reflected in the price. It is, however, a must-have for any serious student of the battle.

A couple of these maps had to be saved at a larger size to preserve legibility.
